Mâche
The old village (1)The village was formerly known as Mars, a name that has nothing to do with the planet or the god of war and may derive from the Old French word ‘marce’, meaning ‘on the margins’. Built at an altitude of 1,300 metres, Mâche is the last permanently inhabited village in the Val d'Hérémence, which remained very isolated until the road was improved, made necessary by the construction of the first Dixence dam (1929-1935).
