Chora Naxos
Promenade to Portara (10)During the Middle Ages, a Christian church was built on the ruins of the temple, but when Naxos came under Venetian rule, it was dismantled so that its marble could be used, among other things, in the construction of the Kastro fortress. Fortunately, as the Portara is made of monoliths weighing 20 tonnes each, it escaped destruction and remains proudly standing to this day.
